Krokodil – Flesh Eating Drug Comes to the United States

KrokodilKrokodil (Desomorphine) is a dangerous narcotic that rapidly rots flesh with each use.  It is often sold in place of heroin by drug dealers trying to maximize their profits since Krokodil is cheaper and produces a similar and possibly even a more powerful “high” or feeling of euphoria than heroin.  Regrettably, this dangerous flesh eating drug first made its appearance in the United States somewhere in late 2013.

Krokodil, more officially known as Desomorphine is a concoction made by cooking codeine with other ingredients including iodine, red phosphorous (the same ingredient found in match strike pads).  Krokodil can also include gasoline, hydrochloric acid, paint thinner and lighter fluid.

Krokodil (Desomorphine) originated in Siberia back in 2002 and spread quickly across Russia and Western Europe.  The Drug Enforcement Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hadn’t provided any confirmed cases of it in the USA until late 2013 when a few suspected cases appeared first in Arizona and also in Illinois.

Note: For those who have been asking, the first photo showing the zombie like face is NOT a result of Krokodil.  It has been long associated with articles describing this drug but it is not real.  We do believe however, that the other photos are real and the content written in this article is accurate and real.  Krokodil is a very dangerous drug and we strongly encourage people to stay as far away from it as possible.

KrokodilKrokodil has some gruesome and often fatal side effects that causes the skin to turn scaly, reptilian green around the injection area (hence the name Krokodil which is the Russian translation of the English word crocodile).  When used repeatedly, festering, pungent sored and ruptured blood vessels can occur causing skin and muscle tissue to rot from the inside out.  With continued use, a user’s bones can be exposed through gaping holes in the flesh and permanent brain damage can occur resulting in spastic movements and speech problems.  Krokodil addicts have been compared to zombies or the “walking dead” given the horrible skin-related problems.

A little Krokodil goes a long away.  Thus, even those who think they’ve filtered out most of the harmful ingredients can experience these dreadful symptoms.  Just the smallest amount of these toxic ingredients can cause life altering side effects that typically eventually result in death.

So why in the world would anyone want to try or use Krokodil?  Regrettably many Krokodil users think they are using heroin until the symptoms become really.  Even when they first appear, it’s often written off or ignored.  But those who know they are using Krokodil use it because it’s significantly cheaper than heroin, approximately 1/10 of the cost.  The high produced from Krokodil is said to be even more powerful than heroin.

While the feeling of euphoria is similar to heroin and lasts a couple of hours, withdrawal begins immediately after the high wears off and can last longer than a month.  In comparison, heroin withdrawal typically only lasts a week.  Moreover, the life expectancy of someone regularly using and/or addicted to Krokodil is said to be around a year or two.
